Colony Music – 1619 Broadway, Times Square NYC  10019

Long a fixture in Times Square, the Colony has closed.  Here is a report of its eminent demise in the Times published on August 23, 2012 – Music Shop Recognizes Somber Tune: Its Final Coda .  Here’s another from the Village Voice Closing the Colony: A Visit to Times Squares Shuttering Sheet Music Outpost with the history of the Colony.  Unlike other record stores, this one also heavily featured sheet music and memorabilia.  And the jumping for joy record store girl. Came here during the odd lunch hour, when there were many more records, scads of shelves lined with them.
Below you will find a photo of Colony from way back in the day.

  1. Thanks for maintaining this website! The Colony was an institution. What I remember most: the prices. I swear they took the list price and marked everything UP a dollar or two. Located next to (?) the Brill Building, It catered to tourists who came to see a Broadway show, and then immediately wanted to buy the sheet music, original cast LP and later CD. I understand that when the store closed, the entire inventory was purchased by the eccentric Brasilian vinyl collector Zero Freitas, who has several million pieces.
