Volume Records – 126 E. State St., Ithaca New York 14850 on the Commons
Now just part of the second floor of a clothing store.
Here’s the entrance when the store had frontage on the Commons in Ithaca.
My wife (and one of my sons) both went to Cornell in upstate New York. Ithaca (a town on a hill, with lots of steep roads if you’re a cyclist trying to get in shape) has a lovely downtown commons, with a central pedestrian only mall and shopping venues on either side. While visiting my wife, I would also visit Volume. One of the great reasons to visit record stores are the guys working there. In independent record stores, they love music, and most will recommend great records you haven’t heard if you ask (or might be playing one of their favorites). I bought many a good record that way. At Volume, the clerk recommended the Replacements – Let It Be (one I well know now, but didn’t then) which I have worn out.
Here’s my favorite song from that album, and my favorite Replacements’ song, Unsatisfied.
And here’s a live version from a concert at Forest Hills in 2014. Someone sure had good seats for this one.
